The cover of the book, The Mizrahi Struggle in Israel: Between Oppression and Liberation, Identification and Alternative, 1948-2003, by Sami Shalom Chetrit
One of my good friends wrote his senior thesis on the Israeli Black Panthers and used one of Chetrit’s books called Intra-Jewish Conflict in Israel: White Jews, Black Jews as his one of his primary sources. I obviously borrowed it from him when he was done and LOVED it. It’s still really expensive because it’s pretty new, but anybody who is interested in reading it and can’t afford to buy it (I think it’s over $100) should definitely try to find it in a library. Very interesting and easy to understand.
Rachel Shabi, an author of Iraqi-Jewish origin, also wrote a good book about this: We Look Like the Enemy: The Hidden Story of Israel’s Jews From Arab Lands. Hers is more of a personal memoir rather than an academic text though.
officially on my reading list for jewish studies!
This looks interesting!
very much so!
